Geofencing

What is geofencing

Geofencing is a technology that uses GPS or RFID to create virtual boundaries around a specific geographic area, enabling software to trigger actions or alerts when a device enters, exits, or remains within that area.

How to use geofencing

To set up geofencing in VisioMapEditor®, there is a few steps you need to follow.

1. Create your geofencing zones by drawing a surface using the footprint style. By default, these types of surfaces are set to use geofencing.

2. Choose an ID for the zones you created so you can call them in your application to trigger events.

3. Publish your map on the desired targets.

Application examples

Geofencing, in a wayfinding map application, can offer a variety of useful features and enhancements. Here are some key applications:

Personalized Notifications

  • ‍Promotional Alerts: Notify users of nearby promotions, discounts or events when they enter a geofenced area around a store or location.
  • ‍Welcome Messages: Send customized welcome messages or useful information when users enter specific areas, like malls or tourist attractions.

Enhanced Navigation and User Experience

  • Proximity Alerts: Alert users when they are near their destination or a point of interest.
  • Automated Check-ins: Enable automatic check-ins or updates when users enter or leave a designated area (useful for events or meetings).

Safety and Security

  • Restricted Areas: Warn users when they are approaching restricted or dangerous areas.
  • Location Tracking: Track valuable asset location and be alerted when they leave a zone.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Foot Traffic Analysis: Collect data on user movement patterns to analyze foot traffic.
  • User Behavior Insights: Understand user preferences and behaviors by tracking which geofenced areas they enter most frequently.

Customer Engagement

  • Interactive Experiences: Trigger interactive experiences or content (e.g., AR experiences, informational videos) as users approach certain landmarks or exhibits.
  • Feedback Collection: Prompt users to provide feedback or reviews when they leave a specific location.

Emergency Management

  • Evacuation Alerts: In case of an emergency, send evacuation instructions to users within a geofenced danger zone.
  • Real-time Updates: Provide real-time updates and instructions based on the user’s location during emergencies.
